The crossing

The fjord is not a road. It is a timetable.

Norlys Kystlinjen is a coastal ferry and express boat operator running 34 routes along the Norwegian fjord coast, with a fleet of 21 vessels and 6.1 million passengers a year. This is the public web edition of our fiscal year 2026 annual report, published in six sections and one letter. It begins on the water, because that is where the year happened.

A crossing: Bergen to Aurland

Two hours and five minutes across 122 kilometres of fjord. This year, 182,700 passengers crossed between Bergen and Aurland during the first six months of operation. The boat leaves the harbour while the water is still grey, and arrives at a dock that did not exist on the old charts.

The schedule below is the weekly sailing plan for that route in fiscal year 2026. Times are local Norwegian time.

    Methodology and exclusions

The greenhouse gas figures use a well to wake accounting boundary for fuel combustion and fuel production. They cover the fiscal year 2026 fleet. They exclude emissions from the embodied carbon of newly delivered vessels, from crew travel, and from freight carried alongside passengers. They do not yet include the effects of shore power installations commissioned later in the year.

    1. Fiscal year 2026 passenger total of 6.1 million follows from the six month route data set; see the data notes.
    2. CO2 per passenger km is calculated as fleet emissions divided by passenger kilometres, derived from route distance and reported passengers.

    07 · The chief executive

    From the chief executive

    Oslo, 30 October 2026

    Dear readers,

In fiscal year 2026, Norlys Kystlinjen carried 6.1 million passengers across 34 coastal routes. Revenue reached 396.5 million kroner. EBITDA was 31.5 million.

I will not apologise for the size of the number. It is the reason we exist. But I will ask you to read it slowly, the way you would read a tide table.

The fjord is not a road. It is a timetable. Every crossing in this report is a promise about weather, about tide, about steel, about the boat, and about the people who trust us with their Tuesday.

That trust is the design constraint of this company. The route network, the fleet, the schedules, the safety systems, the reporting. All of it bends toward one question. Can a boat leave the harbour while the water is still grey, and arrive at a dock that did not exist on the old charts, on time, with everyone safe, and with the timetable holding.

It held. This year the first six months of operation carried 182,700 passengers between Bergen and Aurland. The boat left the harbour while the water was still grey, and arrived at a dock that did not exist on the old charts. The timetable held.

We also rebuilt our reporting. The figures in this edition are the figures the route data support. Six months of passenger data, one total, 6,100,000. Revenue, EBITDA, emissions. We did not smooth the edges before publishing, because the board asked us not to.

During the year we tested two new routes, retired one, and took delivery of four vessels. The delivery of the battery electric fleet is the largest single investment in the company history, and it is the reason the timetable could hold.

Next year we will take the battery electric vessels onto the routes with the deepest winter demand, and we will publish our figures sooner than this edition did, because a timetable that arrives after the fact is only a rumour with a timetable attached.

Thank you for crossing with us. The fjord is not a road. It is a timetable.

    The board statement

The board notes its oversight of the safety management system, the fleet renewal programme and the public reporting process. The board notes that the figures in this report were reviewed by an independent party and that the route data are the single source for all derived figures on the page.

The board notes that it disagrees with the chief executive about the drawer.

    Design rationale

This edition uses Nordic editorial print language on the web. The grid is a twelve column editorial measure of 68 em, capped at 38 em for body text, on a paper tone of #f4f1ea with ink at #202c33 and a single accent of #a8471f. Type comes from a three family system: a serif for display, a grotesque for prose, a mono for numerals and captions, all declared in custom properties.

The type scale is stated once and never deviated from. The palette is paper, ink and one accent, with water tones for the map. The motion budget is one: reading progress and cross highlighting. Nothing decorates on load.

Three taste decisions. First, the figures are the interface: the 6,100,000 figure is set large and the supporting cards use a hairline grid rather than decoration. Second, the map is a sketch, not a GIS render, because the report argument is about water rather than roads. Third, the charts are hand drawn SVG with self chosen scales, because numbers should look like an engineer's notebook, not a dashboard.
