## Scale Mathematics (Nice Tick Algorithm)
The nice tick algorithm follows the Graphics Gems approach:
1. Calculate rough step size: `range / count`
2. Find base-10 exponent of step
3. Select from nice fractions: {1, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10}
4. Final step = niceFraction × base

This produces human-readable axis labels like 0, 5, 10, 15 instead of 0.8, 3.7, 6.4, 9.1.

## Binning Rules

### Freedman-Diaconis Rule
```
bin_width = 2 × IQR / n^(1/3)
```
Where IQR is the interquartile range (Q3 - Q1) and n is sample size.

### Sturges' Rule
```
k = ceil(log₂(n) + 1)
```
Used for histogram bin count in the distribution panel.

## Index Structure (Quadtree)
A 2D quadtree for spatial lookup in scatter plots:
- Partitions space into quadrants
- Recursively subdivides when capacity exceeded
- Queries run in O(log n) average time
- Supports rectangular range queries for brushing

## Re-aggregation Strategy
1. Data is generated with deterministic seeds (no Math.random)
2. Monthly aggregates precomputed on filter change
3. Filter state stored in `currentFilter` variable
4. URL hash serialized for shareable views
5. Self-test validates 12 aggregate checks

## Approximations Made

1. **Canvas vs SVG**: Used SVG throughout for simplicity and accessibility. Performance is adequate.

2. **Density Handling**: Using hexbin-style grid overlay instead of true hexbins for simpler implementation.

3. **Time Scale**: Using month-based grid rather than exact date for simplified monthly aggregation.

4. **Color Palette**: Using simple hue scale for heatmap (blue to cyan) instead of full ColorBrewer implementation.

5. **Brushing**: Rectangle selection rather than complex lasso brushing.
