# Design Rationale for Norlys Kystlinjen Annual Report 2026

## Grid System

The layout uses a responsive grid based on CSS Grid with `repeat(auto-fit, minmax(...))` patterns. Section containers use `max-width: min(70ch, 100%)` for optimal reading measure. The key figures and chart containers grid at 250px minimum width, collapsing to single columns on phones. The governance directory uses `minmax(200px, 1fr)` for optimal card display.

## Type System

**Three font families defined:**
- `--font-serif`: System UI serif (primary text)
- `--font-mono`: System monospace (tables, footnotes)
- `--font-display`: Sans-serif for headings

**Modular scale (ratio 1.25):**
- XS: 0.8rem, SM: 1rem, MD: 1.25rem, LG: 1.563rem, XL: 1.953rem, 2XL: 2.441rem, 3XL: 3.052rem
- Line height: 1.6
- Max width: 70 characters for optimal readability

## Color Palette

**Nordic editorial palette:**
- Primary accent: `#27ae60` (muted green - warmth without vibrancy)
- Text: `#2c3e50` (dark slate, comfortable contrast)
- Background: `#f8f9fa` (paper-like, subtle)
- Success: `#3498db` (blue for financials)
- Warning: `#f39c12` (amber)

Contrast verified: 4.5:1 for body text on white background, 3:1 for large text on accent.

## Three Key Taste Decisions

1. **Coastline as Opening**: Starting with a descriptive passage about a ferry crossing, immediately establishing the maritime character rather than a generic hero with numbered stats.

2. **Hand-crafted SVG Data Visualizations**: All charts (bar, waterfall, pie) are drawn programmatically in SVG with actual data, avoiding generic chart libraries while maintaining crispness at any zoom.

3. **Integrated Route Map**: The coastline map uses a single SVG path representing an abstract Norwegian coastline with clickable route markers, connecting all visual elements through cross-highlighting.

## Accessibility Notes

- Skip link for keyboard users
- Semantic HTML (article, nav, table with captions)
- `prefers-reduced-motion` media query
- Role="banner", role="progressbar"
- ARIA labels on SVG charts
- Focus-visible states on interactive elements
- Tabindex for SVG map and chart containers
